How to Choose a Christian Therapist

Looking for a therapist can feel overwhelming. Wanting someone who also shares your faith can make the search feel even more complicated. You might find yourself wondering: What should I be looking for? How do I know if someone is the right fit for me?

Here are a few simple things to keep in mind when choosing a Christian therapist.

Clarify What Matters Most to You

For some people, it’s important that faith sits at the centre of therapy. This might include prayer, Scripture, or explicitly Christian approaches.

For others, it’s enough to know their therapist shares a Christian background and understands how faith shapes values, relationships, and decisions.

There’s no right or wrong here. Take some time to reflect on what you want your therapy to look like. Consider what role you’d like faith to play in the process.

Look at Training and Experience

It can be tempting to assume that a Christian therapist will automatically have the right tools to help. Professional training and experience matter just as much.

Check that your therapist is qualified and registered with a reputable professional body, such as BACP or UKCP. It’s also important that they have experience working with the issues you want support with.

Shared faith is important. Being in skilled, professional hands is too.

Ask Questions Before You Commit

Many therapists offer an initial consultation. This is your opportunity to ask questions and get a sense of how they work. You might ask:

  • How do you bring faith into the therapy process?
  • What is your approach to prayer, Scripture, or spiritual practices in sessions?
  • How do you balance psychological insight with spiritual care?

Their answers can help you decide whether their approach feels right for you.

Trust the Relationship

One of the most important factors in choosing a therapist, Christian or not, is how you feel with them.

Do you feel safe?
Do you feel listened to and respected?

Research shows that therapy works best when the relationship feels supportive and attuned. Trust your instincts here.

Give Yourself Permission to Change

It’s okay if the first therapist you meet isn’t the right one. Finding someone to walk alongside you in such a personal journey can take time.

You’re allowed to look around. You’re allowed to change your mind.

Finding a Christian therapist isn’t just about shared beliefs. It’s about finding someone who can hold your story with care, honour your faith, and support your growth. You deserve a space where both your humanity and your spirituality are welcomed.
